Storage and handling
We strongly recommend storing, handling, and re-drying flux-cored wires according to the following requirements:
Storage
Flux-cored wires should be stored under properly maintained storage conditions as follows:
- Flux-cored wires should be stored in their unopened and undamaged original packaging. Storage times should be kept as short as possible.
- The "first in, first out" principle should be applied where possible.
- Flux-cored wire should not be stored for longer than 1 year. Flux-cored wires older than this should be re-dried before use.
- Spools should be stored on wooden pallets at a minimum. Storage on the floor or against a wall is not recommended.
- The storage temperature should not fall below 15 °C and should be kept as constant as possible (± 5 °C).
- The relative humidity should not exceed 60% at 15–25 °C and 50% at 25–35 °C.
Handling
- Flux-cored wires should be welded at room temperature and low relative humidity.
- If the relative humidity exceeds 60%, flux-cored wires should not be stored unprotected for more than 24 hours.
- Spools without protective packaging should be exposed to normal workshop conditions for a maximum of 72 hours.
- Between shifts, wire spools should be stored in their plastic bag under the storage conditions mentioned above and at a relative humidity of no more than 50%.
Re-drying
- If the temperature and humidity values mentioned above cannot be maintained, or if the plastic or vacuum packaging is open or damaged, the wire should be re-dried.
- Flux-cored wire that has only been slightly affected by moisture should be re-dried for 2–12 hours at 140–200 °C. The recommended cycle is 6 hours at 150 °C. This applies only to spools.
- Flux-cored wires that are rusted and/or damaged by water cannot be dried and should be discarded.
